About this blog
When and why I started travelling
Firstly, welcome to Raoul Roams! My name is Raoul and I’m an Australian expat originally from Cape Town, South Africa. I’ve been travelling the world on and off since 2015 when I quit my first engineering job to go travelling with my brother in Thailand and Cambodia. That was the spark that first ignited my love for travel and experiencing new cultures and ways of living.

I’ve since worked in a wide range of roles in the data science, tech support, environmental, water and education sectors for the past 9 years and travelled to over 13 countries countries thus far – mainly in Asia. The travel bug bit me and I was hooked on the excitement of exploring new places and seeing how other people around the world lived. I’ve decided to try find work or start a business over time to create a way to sustain this love for travel.
My Ongoing Journey to Financial and Geographic Freedom
My mission is to design a life that’s rich in freedom, not just finances. I’m achieving this through a blend of online business, smart money management, creative thinking, and a lot of trial and error. Here, I’ll be sharing the personal finance tips that have helped me along the way – the small wins, the big lessons, and everything in between.

My goal is to document living and exploring other parts of the world and share some of the best tips about travelling, living and working in other countries that I’ve acquired over the years and that I continue acquiring along the way.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to fine-tune your own approach, I hope you’ll find something here that sparks a new idea or nudges you a step closer to your own version of geographic and financial freedom.
